Summary

Earn While You Learn (EWYL) is an anti-abortion organization that creates and disseminates curricula to be used by anti-abortion centers (AACs). While AACs pretend that their “support” of pregnant people is pure and altruistic, their intentions and actions show otherwise. Rather than provide true, unconditional, and material support for pregnant people, many AACs require pregnant people to attend anti-abortion counseling and biased parenting courses to receive goods like diapers, baby food, and baby clothes. EWYL originated the concept of mandated counseling in exchange for support and now this tactic is used by hundreds of AACs nationwide.

Dinah Monahan founded EWYL in Arizona after her AAC was experiencing low turnout — Monahan claims they were handing out lots of free supplies but that parenting classes were not well attended. Monahan began tying the receipt of parenting and baby supplies to the attendance of the anti-abortion classes. Motivated by racist and classist assumptions, Monahan has said that she hopes this shifts “the paradigms for a generation that has grown up on handouts.” This statement is hypocritical, considering many of the AACs that utilize the EWYL curriculum receive government funding themselves.

The curriculum that EWYL has developed contains problematic, rigidly gendered, anti-abortion extremism rife with finger-wagging and medical disinformation. Subjects include Main Curriculum, Toddler, Parenting, Life Skills, Special Circumstances, Bible Study, Authentic Manhood, and Practical Fatherhood. The explicitly Christian curriculum “creates openings for the counselor to share Christ.” In doing so, EWYL pushes “God’s design for men,” which includes offering fathers support in the form of tools and sporting goods, rather than actual parenting supplies.

EWYL pushes its extremist agenda through its publishing partner, Heritage House ’76, a company run by Brandon Monahan, the son of Dinah and Mike Monahan. This keeps money flowing between the two businesses, allowing them both to profit from the harm they push nationwide. In 2013, EWYL filed to launch BrightCourse, a subscription-based video-streaming service of its curriculum, to modernize its anti-abortion reach and make it easier for AACs to use its biased programming. BrightCourse appears to have subsumed EWYL’s public presence, as EWYL’s website redirects to BrightCourse. BrightCourse is owned and operated by True to Life Productions, Inc., which produces its video content and is also operated by Brandon Monahan. EWYL claims to be used by over 700 AACs across the U.S., which would represent nearly 30 percent of all known AACs nationwide; Dinah Monahan has also claimed EWYL is used by as many as 2,000 AACs as well as internationally. EWYL and BrightCourse offer their anti-abortion curricula in both English and Spanish.

Extremism

When EWYL Founder Dinah Monahan's AAC Was Experiencing Low Attendance At Classes, She Began Mandating Hours To Receive Support

EWYL Was Established To Manipulate Pregnant People Who Need Material Support, Coercing Them Into Anti-Abortion Parenting Classes By Mandating Attendance To Receive “Mommy Money.” “When we set up our pregnancy care center many years ago, we did what most centers did: we set up a closet full of free items to give away. We also scheduled parenting classes. Our ‘free closet’ was very popular; our parenting classes weren’t. […] It seemed that clients came back only when they wanted something. We needed a program that would positively impact the majority of our clients and engage our volunteers in the process. With that goal guiding us, ‘we developed the ‘Earn While You Learn’ (EWYL) program. We set up the ‘Mommy Store,’ a large room in our clinic filled with nicely displayed baby clothes, quilts, formula, and diapers. Our clients earned ‘mommy money’ by attending a weekly one-on-one meeting with a volunteer instructor. […] We no longer gave anything away free, nor did we have to monitor what clients took.” [Earn While You Learn, accessed 5/24/24]

EWYL Pushes Gendered Ideas About The Roles And Expectations For Parents

EWYL Offers “Daddy Dollars” To Men That Can Be Used Toward “Tools and Sporting Goods” Rather Than Actual Parenting Supplies. “If you add the fatherhood program it is a good idea to have a store (maybe just a closet) for dads. In here you can have tools, sporting goods, and other items fathers would love.” [Earn While You Learn, accessed 5/24/24]

EWYL Offers An “Authentic Manhood Pack,” Which Pushes Rigidly Gendered And Religious Lessons. “The Authentic Manhood Pack: There are so many voices out there that are telling you what it means to be a man. This set of ten lessons will help your men clients find God’s truth for both who they are and how they can be intentional about their parenting. Using 10 lessons from the 33 series, your clients can discover God’s design for men with a clear definition and inspiring vision of Authentic manhood.” [Earn While You Learn, accessed 5/24/24]

EWYL Is An Explicitly Christian Proselytizing Business With The Extremist Goal Of Eliminating Abortion

EWYL Pushes Explicitly Christian Propaganda And Advises Clients On How To Covertly Market Themselves Using Christian Fundamentalist Language And Themes. “The Bible Pack: The Bible Study Pack for EWYL is written specifically for your clients. Words that are normal for everyday Christians but foreign to your average client are either defined or removed completely. The lessons give the Gospel presentation in the context of history while providing the Truth that the Bible teaches in easy-to-understand portions.” [Earn While You Learn, accessed 5/24/24]

EWYL Explicitly Incorporates Religious Proselytizing In Their Anti-Abortion Counseling. “By teaching the skills a young woman needs along with supplying items that can help her become a successful mother, EWYL empowers PRCs to offer a real and meaningful choice to those who choose life. The program also builds relationships, gives real skills that will impact generations, and creates openings for the counselor to share Christ. EWYL is not just curriculum, it is a way of making real and permanent changes for the good of the client and the center.” [Earn While You Learn, accessed 5/24/24]

EWYL Peddles Racist And Classist Assumptions About People Who Use Government Services

EWYL Self-Describes Its Original Purpose As Targeting People Who Use Social Safety Net Programs, Using Classist Dog-Whistle Language. “EWYL was designed from the beginning to change the paradigms for a generation that has grown up on hand outs. Instead of giving away items to anyone who asks, the EWYL program allows the client to ‘earn’ the items through learning how to be a better parent.” [Earn While You Learn, accessed 5/24/24]

Dinah Monahan

Dinah Monahan is the founder of Earn While You Learn (EWYL). Monahan founded EWYL after her AAC was experiencing low turnout in its anti-abortion parenting classes. Monahan has pushed racist and classist assumptions about people who use government services and support to help raise their children, claiming that they come from “culture[s]… that are very effective at manipulating and being users.” Rather than being the charitable altruist she portrays herself to be, Monahan operates under a white savior complex that targets people of color and poor people, while pushing her anti-abortion extremist propaganda. Monahan is the founder of the AAC collection Living Hope Women’s Centers and is the current director and president of New Hope Pregnancy Resource Centers, another collection of AACs. Monahan is the founder of PsalmFiftyOne, a division of Robin’s Nest Ministry in Show Low, Arizona (of which Monahan is also the director). Deeply buried emotions may erupt when you are the most vulnerable. The exact way you experience grief over the loss of your child will be unique to you. The point of crisis occurs most often between 2 and 5 years after the abortion. HIPAA Seals Of Compliance, Such As These Are Not Conferred By The U.S. Department Of Health And Human Services And Are In-Name Only. “‘HIPAA Compliance Verification’ is a term used by training providers to indicate an individual or organization has undergone and passed a course in HIPAA compliance. After passing the course in HIPAA compliance, the successful individual or organization is allowed to display the training [provider’s] ‘Certificate’ or ‘Seal of Approval’ on their website and other documentation – such as a résumé. The term ‘HIPAA Compliance Verification’ is often interchanged with ‘HIPAA Certification’ or ‘HIPAA Certified’. None of the three terms are recognized by the Department of Health & Human Services, who state on its website: ‘There is no HIPAA Certification process, and no company has the authority to certify HIPAA compliance. Such certifications do not absolve Covered Entities of their legal obligations.’” [HIPAA Journal, accessed 5/24/24]

Public Dollars Have Been Used By AACs To Purchase EWYL Curriculum

Equity Forward Partner Progress Florida Obtained Records Showing That Florida Pregnancy Care Network (Florida’s A2A Program Administrator) Used “Several Years [Of] State Funds” To Purchase EWYL Curriculum.

[Public Records obtained by Equity Forward’s partner Progress Florida and used here with permission, c. 2018-2019]

Carolina Pregnancy Care Fellowship, A Contractor Of North Carolina’s A2A Program, Has Directed Federal And State Funds Toward the EWYL Curriculum Through Its Subcontractors. “For the past several years, the North Carolina state legislature has directed a portion of its federal Maternal and Child Health block grant to the Carolina Pregnancy Care Fellowship (CPCF), an umbrella group of anti-choice centers; that allotment is $400,000 annually for the current fiscal year and next. Records show anti-choice centers subcontracted by CPCF have, since at least the 2015 budget year, used a portion of these funds to buy Earn While You Learn (EWYL) materials and incentives for those who complete them, with plans to buy more next year. The documents also reveal that centers, with approval from state regulators, purchased religious materials with federal funds, including DVDs intended to help men ‘discover authentic manhood as modeled by Jesus Christ.” [Rewire News, 4/26/18]

An Indiana AAC Spent Federal Dollars It Received For An Infant Mortality Initiative On A Five-Year BrightCourse Subscription. “Since the Wabash Valley C.P.C.’s founding, thirty-one years ago, its annual budget has increased from twenty-one thousand dollars to four hundred and seventy thousand dollars. Most of this has come from donations from individuals and churches, but last spring it was awarded seventy-six thousand seven hundred dollars as part of a $4.5 million federal program called the West Central Indiana Healthy Start initiative; the program aims to combat Indiana’s infant-mortality rate, which is the seventh highest in the country. The C.P.C. has spent the funds on a five-year subscription to a curriculum designed by BrightCourse, a video-streaming service often used by such centers, and on the part-time salary of a teacher for parenting classes. It also used the grant to buy the portable ultrasound machine, for thirty-eight thousand dollars, and to pay the part-time salary of Mary Hargis, the sonographer.” [The New Yorker, 11/11/19]
